Seiko ‘The Black Series 2018’ Prospex divers watches.
Inspired by the alluring world of night diving, Seiko brings three new watches to their already vast Prospex Sea range; enthralling in both aesthetic and craftsmanship.
Aptly named ‘The Black Series 2018’ these three timepieces reflect the palette of night diving; forged from stainless steel with a jet black coating, the only indication of colour comes from the luminescent orange accents echoing the orange glow of the divers lights; a glimpse of the cacophony of colour unknown to these ocean depths. Harnessing Seiko’s patented LumiBrite coating the orange arrow hands and circular hour markers are capable of emitting up to 8 hours of light during these midnight dives.
Each watch in the Black Series is water resistant up to 200 meters allowing for diving with the use of Oxygen tanks and with their Diamond like Carbon coating; these Prospex watches are designed to withstand the pressures and uncertainties found in this mysterious realm. Hardlex mineral glass protects the dials of each Black Series watch, whilst providing excellent legibility in absent light conditions. The SNE493P1 model features a magnified Hardlex window magnifying the date display of the dial.
As standard with any diving watch from the Seiko Prospex range; each of the Black Series watches features a unidirectional rotating bezel forged from stainless steel and coated with a Diamond like Carbon coating; these precise and secure bezels are designed to prevent accidental rotation whilst diving, ensuring that the measured time underwater is never shorter than the actual time elapsed. Each model has a screw down crown guaranteeing the watch remains protected from water at all times. Each of the Black Series watches is set upon a durable black silicon strap with a corrugated design, allowing for extension of the watch when worn over a wet-suit; the flexible silicon strap is fastened by a secure stainless steel DLC coated buckle giving the wearer the option of resizing as and when required.
Two of the three Black Series watches feature a solar powered movement; SNE493P1 presents with a more simplistic aesthetic with the only additional feature being that of the magnified date window at the 3 O’clock position; whereas SSC673P1 offers three sub-dials, showing a 24 hour clock; a 60 second chronograph/stopwatch and a 60 minute timer. At a glance these watches appear near identical however it should be noted that SSC673P1 has an additional two buttons located around the crown enabling the chronographic functions. SSC673P1 is capable of storing power for 6 months whereas SNE493P1 has a power reserve of 10 months.
Seiko’s final offering from the Black Series is arguably the most impressive and is sure to attract the attention of those committed to enhancing their collection of special edition Seiko watches. With a 45mm Diamond like Carbon coated case and unidirectional rotating bezel, the SRPC49K1 model or more appropriately nicknamed ‘The Turtle’ features a 4R36 23 jewel Automatic movement and a 41 hour power reserve. This well-designed dial features both the day and date located at the 3 O’clock position.
